
Why we use explosion-proof quartz in bathroom heaters
Think about your bathroom. It’s a weird place. One minute it’s freezing, the next it’s a steam room. If you’ve got a towel rail or a ceiling heater, that heating element is basically living in a war zone of temperature swings. Here’s the problem: standard quartz tubes are picky. If a single drop of cold water hits a tube that’s glowing at 600°C, it can crack. Or worse, it can shatter. Nobody wants a rain of glass shards in their shower. That’s why we stick with explosion-proof quartz.
The “Thermal Shock” headache
Quartz is great for letting heat through, but it has a bit of a temper. When steam or a splash hits one specific spot on the tube, that spot cools down instantly while the rest stays scorching. This creates a massive amount of tension in the glass. Without the right treatment, the tube just gives up and snaps. To fix this, we wrap our tubes in a specialized mesh or a reinforced coating. If the glass does happen to fail, the mesh holds everything together. It keeps the fragments trapped so they don’t end up on your bathroom floor.
Getting towels dry, fast
We’ve tweaked the filament thickness and the purity of the quartz so these lamps hit their top temperature in seconds. It’s not a slow warm-up. You get that intense, short-wave infrared heat that cuts right through damp fabric. But there’s a catch. Because the heat is so concentrated, the housing around the tube has to be heavily insulated. If you put these in a box without any venting, the thermal cutoff switch will probably trip and shut everything down before you’ve even finished your shower.
A few tips for installation
When you’re wiring these up, make sure the connectors are tight. We use corrosion-resistant terminals because moisture loves to creep into electrical contacts. If the fit is loose, you’ll get arcing, and the unit will burn out way sooner than it should. And please, make sure the circuit is grounded. When you’re dealing with water and electricity in a small room, it’s the only way to make sure everyone stays safe.
