
Why we’re ditching the old bathroom lamp heaters for IP66 Infrared
Let’s be honest: those old-school bathroom lamp heaters usually aren’t up to the task. They’re just not built for the steam and splashes of a real bathroom. That’s why we’re seeing so many people switch over to IP66-rated infrared systems. Now, “IP66” sounds like tech-speak, but all it really means is that the unit is totally dust-tight and can handle a direct blast of water without flinching. If you’re putting a heater anywhere near a shower or a tub, that’s basically the only way to go.
Warm skin, not air
Here is the thing about traditional heaters: they try to warm up the air. But in a bathroom, the steam and the drafts just push that warm air around, and you’re still shivering the second you step out of the shower. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air. Instead, it sends out warmth that hits your skin and the walls directly. It feels like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day.**It’s instant.**No waiting around for the room to “warm up.”
Built for the splash zone
Water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. To make these things safe, we seal everything up tight. We use high-temp gaskets and alloys that won’t rust or corrode when things get humid. We also use tempered glass and quartz tubes. Why? Because if a cold drop of water hits a red-hot element, cheap glass will crack. Ours won’t. Plus, a lot of budget heaters use plastic seals that warp and shrink after a few months of heating and cooling. We use silicone. It stays flexible, keeps the moisture out, and stops your internal wiring from rotting away.
A few things to keep in mind
You’ll want to wire these into their own dedicated circuit. They pull a decent amount of power to get that instant heat, so just make sure your breaker can take the load. And there’s one trade-off. Because the unit is sealed airtight to keep the water out, it can’t “breathe” as easily as an open-frame heater. This means the internals get pretty hot. Don’t tuck these into a tiny, cramped ceiling void with no airflow. Give them some space. If you don’t, the thermal cutout will kick in and shut the unit down. It’s a small price to pay for a heater that won’t short out while you’re scrubbing your hair.
