
Getting Your Wide-Width Low-E Glass Preheating Right
If you’re working with Low-E glass wider than 3 meters, you know the struggle. You need the heat to be perfectly even across the whole sheet. But here’s the problem: standard, off-the-shelf lamps just don’t cut it. You end up with cold spots, and that ruins the finish. That’s why we build custom, ultra-long infrared heating units. We design them specifically for those wide-format tunnels where “close enough” isn’t good enough.
The Headache of Scaling to 3 Meters
You can’t just stretch a quartz tube and call it a day. When you go that long, you run into some annoying physics—voltage drops and thermal expansion. If you just cram high wattage into one long circuit, you’re going to stress your power supplies. Not a good look. To fix this, we balance the wattage so the center of the glass doesn’t lag behind the edges. We usually split these into zoned sections. It gives you way more control. You can actually tune the heat for different parts of the conveyor instead of just hoping for the best.
The Nitty-Gritty Hardware
We use heavy-wall quartz glass. Why? Because at high temperatures, thin tubes start to sag under their own weight. Nobody wants a drooping heater. For Low-E coatings, we stick with shortwave or medium-wave emitters. They punch through the glass surface fast. We also beef up the mounting brackets because a 3-meter assembly is a heavy piece of kit. And a quick tip on the wiring: don’t cheap out. These units pull a lot of power. We use high-temp leads so nothing melts when your tunnel hits peak temperature.
The Trade-off
Here is the honest truth. A 3-meter continuous unit is great because it gets rid of those annoying gaps you see in modular setups. No more “zebra stripes” on your glass. It’s a clean, smooth heat. But, there’s a catch. Maintenance is a bit more involved. If one filament burns out in a continuous tube, you’re replacing the whole section. It’s a bigger job than swapping a tiny bulb. Still, for high-end Low-E production, that’s a price worth paying for a perfect thermal profile.
