Tempering glass is all about that sudden, aggressive jump in temperature. You need it to create those compression and tension layers, but when you’re working with thick marine-grade glass, things get risky. One wrong move and you’ve got thermal shock—basically, the glass expands unevenly and just snaps. It’s a nightmare. To stop that from happening, we use shortwave IR heating lamps. Why? Because they react almost the second you touch the controls. The magic of fast power Most ovens rely on hot air, which is slow. IR lamps are different; they use radiation. We build these systems so you can tweak the power on the fly. The moment your controller drops the voltage or adjusts the duty cycle, the heat drops. Period. It happens instantly. This means you can back off the intensity the second the glass hits its softening point. You aren’t accidentally cooking the surface while the core is still trying to catch up. Getting the hardware right For that heavy-duty marine glass, you need some serious heat density. We usually go with high-wattage quartz tubes. These things push energy into a narrow spectrum that actually gets into the glass, not just on top of it. But here’s the catch: your power supply has to be spot on. If you under-power a high-wattage tube, you’ll never hit tempering temp in time. Over-power it? You’ll fry the filament in a few hours. It’s a delicate balance. The trade-offs (because nothing is perfect) High-density IR arrays are power-hungry. They put a massive load on your electrical setup. And while that fast response is great for saving your glass, these lamps put out a ton of ambient heat. If you don’t get your cooling fans and housing right, you’re going to warp your fixtures. It’s a mess you don’t want to clean up. One last tip: if you’re swapping these into an old line,**check your connectors.**A loose fit at the terminal leads to arcing, and that’s a fast track to a dead lamp.
